CENOTES
Description.
Cenotes are one of the most unique and unforgettable experiences you can have in the Riviera Maya—natural freshwater sinkholes formed over thousands of years, hidden within the jungle and filled with crystal-clear, turquoise water. For the ancient Maya, these sacred pools were believed to be gateways to another world, and today they offer a rare blend of adventure, beauty, and tranquility. Whether you’re swimming, snorkeling, or simply taking in the peaceful surroundings, every cenote feels like discovering a hidden paradise.
There are three main types of cenotes you can explore:
**open cenotes**, fully exposed and bathed in sunlight;
**semi-open cenotes**, partially covered with a mix of light and shade; and
**underground cenotes**, mysterious cave systems where beams of light pierce through the darkness, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
